Robert Weir Schultz (1860-1951) joined the office of Richard Norman Shaw in 1884, where he met William Lethaby, F.W. Troup, Ernest Gimson and Ernest and Sidney Barnsley. He was a leading figure in the Byzantine Revival; St. Andrew's Chapel, Westminster Catheral (1910) is perhaps his finest example in this style. Ernest Gimson executed a number of his designs, including the choir stalls in the St. Andrew's Chapel.

This lamp is an early and important example of his work and well illustrates his interest in topiary. '...... there is nothing but praise to be said of this small but very carefully designed object.' (Studio, Vol.9, October 1896)
