Lot Essay

Marshcourt, a sumptuous house and garden designed and built by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Herbert Johnson in 1901-1904, with the great distinction of having walls of local chalk, and an unique billiards table of chalk with a moulded base. After receiving the commisssion Lutyens wrote to his wife in March 1901 that he was going "to start at once on drawings for house, garden and furnishings"
