This silhouette is the only known work so far known to suggest that Edouard continued cutting silhouettes on his return to Calais in 1850. Previously, the latest known works date from 1849 and were taken in New york and Saratoga. In the recently discovered lost folio of "Quaker Sitters" (1842-1843), we see Edouart's use of pencil and chalk to emphasise the costume, hair and accessories of the sitters', a technique that is also evident in this silhouette. The Quaker folio also shows rows of silhouettes with their names and dates handwritten underneath by Edouart, sometimes with no link beteween the sitters as in lots 4 and 5.
