Lot Essay

Michael Frederick Trench (1746-1836), land-owner and amateur architect, designed a new house and garden on his family estate, Heywood, Queen's County (County Leix). The house was built in the local grey stone and stood on the side of a hill facing south-west and sloping to a lake. Trench had a Gothic ruin transported from the ruined Dominican friary at Agaboe, some twelve miles away. Edward Malins and The Knight of Glin remark in "The Lost Demenses Irish Landscape Gardening, 1660-1845, write that "before Frederick Trench died, this landscape, in the Stourhead romantic-poetic tradition was perfect. He later assisted Richard Johnston with his designs for the Assembly Rooms, next to the Rotunda in Dublin.

He married Anne Helena (1741-1831), daughter and heiress of Patrick Stewart of Killymoon, Co. Tyrone. A portrait of their daughter, Lady Domville also by Comerford was sold in these rooms 4 March, 1992, lot 89.

John Comerford's manuscript records Mrs Trench sat for her portrait in July 1818.
