Lot Essay

INDENTThe arms are those of Spencer quartering Churchill with Acklom quartering Stanhope for John Charles, 3rd Earl Spencer and his wife Esther, only daughter and heiress of Richard Acklom of Wiseton Hall, Nottingham whom he married in 1814
INDENTThe seal dates from the period between his marriage and 1834 when he succeeded his father George John, 2nd Earl Spencer. The viscount's coronet denotes that he was Viscount Althorp at the time, but strictly speaking it is incorrect to bear a coronet of rank and supporters if the title is a courtesy one. Another instance of this appears in Brington Church, Northamptonshire. See P. Summers, Hatchments in Britain (1974), vol.1, p.9

INDENTCf. P. Hinks, Nineteenth Century Jewellery (1975), pl.13 (d)
