INDENTJohn Field (1772-1848) described by E.Nevill Jackson, The History of Silhouettes, Connoisseur (1911) as 'one of the finest and most famous of silhouette artists' started his career as an assistant to John Miers. Many silhouettes intended for use in jewellery are signed 'Miers' but those painted after c.1794 and all the bronzed examples are by John Field (1772-1848). Field's long career began as assistant to John Miers (c.1758-1821) after which he worked with Miers' son William before embarking on his own assisted by his son, Henry William Field. See S. McKechnie, British Silhouette Artists and their Work 1760-1860 (1978) pp. 687, 690
