Persian translation of the Arabic work Al-Arbai'in by the renowned Safavid scholar Baha al-Din al-Amili (d.AH 1031/1622 AD) which discusses the forty selected sayings of the Prophet, manuscript on buff paper, 423ff. plus four flyleaves, each with 15ll. of Persian nasta'liq mixed with Arabic naskh, the latter overlined in red, occasional words in red, gold margin between black rules, blue outer margin, marginal notes in black and red, some of the latter erased, (some smudging, staining, damages and repairs, pages trimmed), opening double folio (repaired) and ff. 16v. and 17r. with illuminated heading containing the bismillah within a gold palmette vine border, penultimate page with colophon signed by 'Ain 'Ali al-Tabrizi and dated 1059, later black morocco binding with stamped lattice and border (scuffed), marbled paper doublures

Lot Essay

This translation was made for Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah, the Sikh ruler of Golconda. On the final page there is a copy of a note by Baha al-Din approving the translation. The translator was the prime minister of the Golconda Kingdom and died in AH 991 at Mocha on his way to perform the Hajj.
The present copy was endowed by Mirza Husain al-Husaini in AH 1203/1788-9 AD.

The original of this manuscript with the autobiography of Baha al-Din Amili is preserved in the Salor Jang Museum, Hyderabad, India.
