the famous parables and tales illustrating the wisdom of Sa'di, Persian manuscript on ivory paper, 77ff. plus five flyleaves, each with 15ll. of fine black shikasteh, occasional words in red, the text divided in places by fine gold lines between black rules, gold margin within black rules, blue outer rule, narrow outer margin, (a few small stains), opening double folio finely illuminated predominantly in red, gold and blue, final page with colophon signed by Sayyid 'Ali and dated 1253, contemporary lacquer binding with a border of floral cartouches round a panel of concentric dense floral medallions (minor wear), red lacquer doublures

Lot Essay

This copy was presented by Nizam al-Mulk to his son of the same name in AH 1331 and a note on the last page indicates how the copy was inherited within the family.
