[SWINBURNE, Algernon Charles]. Undergraduate Papers numbers I and II. Oxford: W. Mansell, December 1857 and March 1858.

2 parts, 8° (217 x 138mm.). 122 pp., F4 in part 1 a cancel, page 111 numbered 11. Both in original printed paper wrappers (spines strengthened), in buckram case.

Only two of three issues published, of the greatest rarity. Six complete copies are known, all apparently bound up without the wrappers. They are at B.L. (Ashley Library), Harvard, Princeton, University of Texas, Huntingdon, and the Swinburne Collection of E.S. & J.S. Mayfield.

This short-lived journal was issued as the official organ of a group of Oxford students who named themselves the 'Old Mortality', conducted mainly by A.C. Swinburne, John Nichol and T.H. Green. It contains Swinburne's first published work 'The Early English Dramatists', the poem 'Queen Yseult', 'Modern Hellenism' (an attack on Matthew Arnold), 'The Monomaniac's Tragedy'. One further contribution, 'Church Imperialism', appeared in issue III. It would appear that the first issue sold only 80 copies. A facsimile edition, with introduction by F.J. Sypher, was published by Scholar's Facsimiles, N.Y. 1974. Wise, Ashley Library volume VI p. 367. (2)
