8° (168 x 108mm.). Engraved portrait by P. Van der Banck after P. Lely, title printed in red and black (lacks first blank leaf, a few minor rustholes, small wormholes and waterstains in lower margin of some leaves.). Contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments with red lettering piece (small wormholes at foot, scuffed). Provenance: Hon. Tho. Trevor (bookplate pasted on verso of title); Elianore Marn (bookplate pasted on upper cover). Fifth edition. Wing W-517; Grolier Wither to Prior 931.
Includes ten manuscript poems which circulated but were not published before 1690, inscribed in two late 17th-century hands on front and back pastedowns, free end-papers and on back of the portrait, 9 pages of writing; the titles and opening lines of the verses, some of which are excerpts of the poems as published later, are as follows:
1. 'Then lett ye muses wth such notes as these Instruct us what belongs unto our peace', 16 lines.
2. 'The continuation of the poem On the Picture of a fair youth taken after he was dead, page 230' 'No wonder then he sped in love so well When his high passion he had breath to tell', 6 lines.
3. Long and Short Life 'Circles are prais'd, nor yt abound In largeness but be exactly round', 4 lines.
4. 'Ours is ye harvest where ye Indians mow We plough ye deep and reap what others sow', 94 lines from A Panegyric to my Lord Protector.
5. An Epigram on a painted Lady wth ill teeth 'Were men so dull they could not see That Lyes painted, should they flee', 12 lines.
6. To Chloris 'Chloris what's eminent we know Must for some cause be valued so', 14 lines.
7. Upon ye Late storm & death of ye Late Usurper Oliver Cromwell 'He must resign: Heav'n his great soul does claim', 34 lines.
8. 'A copy of verses written by Mr Waller, above forty years since & never printed in any edition of his Poems' [Song] 'Chloris farewell: I now must go', 28 lines.
9. Epitaph on ye Lady Sedley 'Here lies ye Learned Savils Heir So early wise, so lasting fair', 35 lines.
10. On ye D[uke] of M[onmouth]'s expedition into Scotland in ye summer 'Swift as Jove's Messenger ye winged God', 47 lines.
