Richard Kendall served six years in the 10th Hussars before volunteering for service in Italy, 16 September l860; served with Colonel Dowling's English Artillery, in Garibaldi's Army of the South, and took part in the Battle of Volturno 19 October l860 when he was engaged in throwing a pontoon bridge over the River Volturno (recommended for the Sardinian Medal of Valour, and publicly thanked by Garibaldi through Colonel Dowling); took part in the bombardment of Capua, November 1860; Corporal 6 December l860, and Sergeant l January 1861; Sergeant Kendall was discharged 5 February 1861
