INDENTMajor John Russel Wardle, born 1878, son of Mr. H. Wardle, M.P. of Highfield Burton, educated at Uppingham, became a Maltster by profession and was a Director of the Glasgow firm of Hugh Baird and Sons Ltd. Major Wardle was associated with the 5th Bn. Highland Light Infantry before joining the Q.O.R. Glasgow Yeomanry. In 1915, "A" and "B" Squadrons were despatched to France and "C" Squadron, commanded by Major Wardle, proceeded to Egypt, joining the 52nd Division at Gallipoli in October where they were attached to the 4th Btn K.O.S.B. who had suffered severe casualties. Together with the K.O.S.B., the Q.O. Glasgow Yeomanry were relieved in the trenches, 31 December prior to their evactuation from Cape Helles.

Acting as Military Landing Officer, Major Wardle was killed by a shell on "W" Beach, 2 January 1916 and was buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli.
