INDENT Captain Geoffrey Hughes of Liverpool, educated at Greenbank and at Rugby, a partner in the shipping firm of T & J Harrison, was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 6th Bn. Liverpool Regiment October 1914 and proceeded to France in February 1915. During his service on the Western Front he took part in the principle engagements of his Regiment; was wounded on the Somme, 1916 and suffered from an attack of trench fever in the following year. He transferred to the 1st Bn. Grenadier Guards early in 1918 and serving in No. 2 Company was hit by a shell near Boisleux-au-Mont 5 August 1918 after he had left his dug-out to attend to the safety of his men - severely wounded he died in the evening of the same day; he was buried at Berles-au-Bois, near Arras (Liverpool's Scroll of Fame, Rugby Memorials and the Grenadier Guards History Vol. III refers)
