INDENT 20-1553 Private William Richardson, born, lived and enlisted, Newcastle on Tyne, was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, aged 18 years and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to those who have no known grave. The 20th Battalion sustained the heaviest casualties of the Regiment on this day - a total of 302 Other Ranks and 11 Officers were killed in action
