INDENTSecond Lieutenant Edward John Hayward, educated Whitgift, went to China 1911, joined the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, volunteered for active service on the outbreak of war and left China with the 2nd Shanghai Contingent October, 1914; joined the Inns of Court O.T.C. and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 2nd Bn. Royal Fusiliers, February 1915; embarked for Gallipoli in September and on arrival was made Adjutant of the Bn., organized for "beach" duty at Suvla Bay; he was appointed Brigade Machine Gun Officer attached to the Brigadier-General's Staff and it was in that capacity that he was shot through the temple and killed by a sniper 12 November, 1915 - he is commemorated in Azmak Cemetery, Suvla (Whitgift Grammar School Memorial Book and Croydon in the Great War refer)
