INDENT Lieutenant Frederick Charleston, born 1889 at Clapham, London, educated at University College, London, joined the O.T.C. January, 1909 and received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant Lancashire Fusiliers, 1911; returning to England from India on the outbreak of war, he joined the 2nd Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers at the Front October, 1914 and was advanced to Lieutenant May, 1915; he was slightly gassed at the 2nd Battle of Ypres and died 7 July, 1915 from wounds received in action at Pilkem, near Ypres ... he was in charge of a machine-gun section which was hit by a shell. Lieutenant Charleston was buried at Farm Olivier, Elverdingue and is commemorated in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Clapham Common
