INDENT Second Lieutenant Alan Langlands, educated at Millmead, Shibbington and at Wellington College was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant into the 3rd Bn. South Wales Borderers October, 1914 and joined the 1st Bn. March, 1915. He was killed leading his platoon in action on Auber's Ridge, 9 May 1915. His Company Commander wrote, "After the first asssault had disastrously failed, we were sent up as one of the first regiments to try again.... immediately the guns lifted a most murderous machine-gun and rifle fire was turned on to them. As soon as I saw this, and the assaulting platoon being slaughtered, we did all we could and prevented the rest of the men from leaving the trench." 2nd Lieutenant Langlands was buried at St. Vaasts Poste.
