INDENT Major James Tennant Smith, educated at Buxton College, served in the East Lancs. Territorials before the Great War; he had the honour as Sub-Lieutenant of receiving the Regimental Colours from Edward VII at Worsley on the occasion of their presentation. He went to Egypt with his Bn. September, 1914 and took part in the first engagements on the Suez Canal; was employed as Divisional Transport
Officer at Gallipoli for five months from May 1915 from whence he was invalided home; returned to Egypt later in 1916 and was promoted Captain; transferred to France, March 1917 as Temporary Major second in command of the Bn. On 5 June, 1917 when in command of the Bn. during the temporary absence of the Colonel, Major Smith was killed in the Bn. trenches at Havrincourt Wood probably from a sniper's bullet
