INDENTMajor Michael Claud Scarborough, born 1882, served in the Scottish Rifles (Militia) in the South African War, 1902 and was commissioned Lieutenant, Middlesex Regiment, 1903; Captain 1913; served during the Great War, was made Temporary Major and Second in Command 12th Middlesex Regiment February 1916 (Mentioned 'For Gallantry in the Field' by Lord French 1.1.1916). Major Scarborough commanded the 12th Bn. on various occasions before he was killed in the attack on Thiepval Ridge 26 September 1916. The 18th Division History mentions the discovery of his body by the Bedfords: "...his body was in a sitting position near the chateau arch, as though he slept" - an earlier passage indicated that he had been shot in the head.
