Major Thomas James Deane was awarded the George Medal for Bomb and Mine Disposal Work while serving with 22 Bomb Disposal Company, Royal Engineers, at the following locations; Romford, Essex, August 1940- personally supervised the digging out and rolling over of two parachute mines; Great Baddow, Essex, January, 1941- showed great courage by remaining down a shaft with two 1000 kg. bombs until their steralisation was complete, although a small explosion had ocurred and the cause undetermined; Railway Gas Works and Petrol Depot, Saxmundham, Essex, 15 May 1941- successfully defused four 250 kg. bombs each containing 25 fuses; and Hollesley, Suffolk, August 1941- broke the suction of, lifted, and rolled over a parachute mine buried 17 feet, prior to defusing- the weapon was fitted with a new type of clock. In a twelve month period 1940-41, Deane had successfully dealt with over 200 bombs of all types and assisted the Navy with 35 parachute mines knowing them to be of a very sensitive nature (Recommendations refer)
