Dalou first worked on the subject of the Boulonnaise woman at the begining of his English period. This figure of the Boulonnaise au Rameau was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872 and bought by the Earl of Carlisle. He subsequently returned to the subject several times, including the Boulonnaise allaitant son enfant. This group of the mother nursing her child was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1877 to great acclaim, and of which the present bust is a reduction. The bust was cast in England, possibly by the Cantoni foundry, and is known in both signed and unsigned versions. It is also known in a posthumous cast by Susse Frères, and in a further reduced version truncated at the neck. By isolating the head and shoulders Dalou has concentrated the pensive and delicate features of the mother, while maintaining the 'genre' atmosphere through the glimpse of cloak and bonnet.
