As with Lot 55, the present marble is an interesting work by the celebrated Greek sculptor Georgios Vroutos (1843-1908). Apollo is represented as patron of the Muses, holding the lyre and quill to signify his role as god of poetic inspiration and the creative arts. By emphasising the softness of the flesh and the attention to naturalistic detail, such as the pupils and life-like tree trunk, Vroutos has transformed an Antique archetype into a 19th century ideal.
