Lot Essay

Designed in the William IV 'Elizabethan' style with its salomonic columnar supports and ebony veneer, the top of this table displays a chessboard with portraits of poets alternating with ... within a border of picturesque landscapes. Such items were manufactured by Anthony Sandoe, Fancy Stationer and Cabinet-Maker of Southampton Row, Russell Square in the 1830s (see: Dictionary of English Furniture-Makers, Leeds, 1986, p. 780)
