The curved movable settle with grocery-storage cupboard below the seat and high bacon-cupboard above were a common feature of Devon and West Country vernacular interiors well into this century. The curve was intended to trap the heat of the fire rather than to reflect any architectural feature. A related settle is illustrated in C.
