Lot Essay

The pattern for this elegant 'parlour' chairback of Grecian pelta-shield form with radiating palmette-like splats appears in all three editions of A. Hepplewhite & Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, 1789 and 1794, pl. 9, chair Z. The armchair is very similar in design to a pair illustrated in C. Claxton-Stevens and S. Whittington, The Normal Adams Collection, 18th Century English Furniture, Woodbridge, 1985, p. 80, pl. 11
