Lot Essay

In 1956 His Royal Highness Prince Philip invited Seago to join him on his World Tour on Her Majesty's Yacht 'Britannia'. Seago's journey began at the Melbourne Olympic Games which His Royal Highness Prince Philip had opened and the yacht travelled through Antartica and the South Atlantic onto West Africa.

Seago and Prince Philip boarded the 'John Biscoe', a research ship of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, on New Year's Day 1957 for a two week journey through the Artic Circle before rejoining 'Britannia'. Seago was intrigued by the colours and light of the Antartic paintings and found the glaciers with their luminous blue and green hues 'tremendously exciting to paint'
