Lot Essay

This type of leg is often found on library tables and Carlton House desks of this date (see: P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol. III, p.257, fig. 41). A similar writing-table was sold anonymously in these Rooms 19 November 1981, lot 96. Another from the collection of the late Countess of Sefton was sold on 19 June 1980, lot 19.
