'Lavery's first works show no particular committment to any specific genre, By producing a variety of costume pieces, sentimental pictures, head studies and landscapes, he hoped to identify a clientele. Amongst his first supporters was the Glasgow photographer, Terence Stevenson who, at the end of November 1880, purchased 'Her First Disappointment' along with two landscapes and a picture of Gretchen of Heidleberg (private collection). The model for 'Her First Dissapointment' was a Gaiety skipping rope dancer, Connie Gilchrist (1865-1946). In 1892 she was to marry the 7th Earl of Orkney, She had been painted by Whistler as 'Harmony in Yellow and Gold: The Gold Girl' (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), a memorable portrait exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1879. A further unfinished full-length by Whistler is contained in the Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow'
