Crofts 1904' and indistinctly inscribed 'The armies were not completely drawn/up till after five in the evening, there/was a ditch between them; they stood/facing one another, motionless except/the exchange of a few cannon shots, for an hour and half/Carlyle.' and signed and inscribed 'Oil Painting/Prince Rupert and his Staff at Marston Moor/Ernest Crofts RA' ol old labels attached to the reverse; oil on canvas
