Lot Essay

This drawing was etched by Mortimer as: Banditti taking his Post and published in December 1778 as part of a volume of fifteen prints dedicated to Sir Joshua Reynolds. There is also an oil painting, signed with monogram and in the same direction as the etching, in the Detroit Institute of Arts. The etching was published as a pair with Banditti on the look out. Such subjects were derived from Salvator Rosa, both from his works and from his reputed early years as a captive and associate of Bandits
