Lot Essay

Chettle House was almost certainly built to the designs of Thomas Archer (circa 1668-1743) for George Chafin (1689-1766), longstanding Member of Parliament for Dorset. The House was built between 1710-1715. This watercolour is particularly interesting as it confirms to Architectural Historians the original configuration of the upper storeys, which had been demolished and remodelled by Edward Castleman, the new owner, in 1846.
