Lot Essay

Waterhouse dated the present portrait to the late 1770's. The identification of the sitter has traditionally been given to General Thomas Meyrick (c.1764 - 1830). He entered the army in August 1779 as an Ensign in the 2nd Foot, became a Lieutenant in November 1779 (6th Foot), a Captain in February 1781 (28th Foot), a Major in January 1794 (82nd Foot), a Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1794 (99th Foot), a Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1794 (21st Foot), a Major-General in September 1803, a Lieutenant-General in July 1810 and a General in July 1821.
