The sitter is presumed to be Sophia, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Charles Raymond, 1st Bart, and his wife, Anna Maria Tanner. She married firstly, in 1773, William Burrell M.P., of Knepp Castle who inherited the baronetcy upon the death of his father-in-law in 1788. Sir William Burrell, 2nd Bart died in 1796 and was in turn succeeded by their son Sir Charles Merrik Burrell as 3rd Bart. She married secondly, in 1797, Rev. William Clay and died in 1802. The identification of her as Mrs Burrell is from an old inscription on the back of the canvas, now lost beneath the re-lining.
