Lot Essay

This would appear to be another version of the oil illustrated in Trevor Blakemore, The Art of Herbert Schmalz, 1911, p. 106, owned by Henry Silver and reproduced in colour by Frost & Reed. The composition is one of Schmalz's most successful variations on the theme of the Madonna and Child.
