NAPOLEON I (Emperor of France, 1804-1821). Letter signed (as First Consul, 'Bonaparte') to an unidentified Prince, Paris, 'le 8 germinal an 9 [29 March 1801], in French, acknowledging a letter of February 20, and promising to listen with particular interest to a messenger whom his correspondent is to send to Paris, ½ page, 4to (small fragment of sealing wax in blank lower portion, integral blank leaf).

The letter, seemingly expressed in guarded terms, suggests that the emissary, if he lacks credentials, should obtain access to Bonaparte through the bearer of the previous letter. In March 1801 the English had placed an embargo on Swedish, Russian and Danish vessels, culminating in Nelson's Baltic expedition, and the letter, possibly to the Crown Prince of Denmark, probably refers to Napoleon's support for these states in their resistance.
