4° (288 x 202mm.). (Lacking front blank, occasional light spotting). Contemporary French red morocco gilt, covers with border composed from various rolls including greek-key and dog-tooth, the large central panel with an overall design of 31 equally-spaced vertical lines tooled using a dot-roll, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the others with a repeat geometric design employing dot-rools and various small tools, 'L.Duperret' tooled at foot of spine, wide turn-ins tooled in gilt, blue watered silk doublures and liners, g.e. (extremities somewhat rubbed, blemishes to surface of leather on covers). Provenance: L. Duperret (binding, ?C.R.Laus Du Perret, 1747-1792, French politician, implicated but cleared of involvment in the murder of Marat.); Mr. Jourdain (inscription).

FIRST BASKERVILLE EDITION with an unusual binding. Gaskell *1: 'Baskerville's first and perhaps his finest book'.
