Although this picture is not recorded in Leader's records of paintings sold, a smaller, almost identical view was offered at Tennant's, Leyburn on 18 April 1996, lot 551. Leader is known to have made two visits to Switzerland: in 1872, and again in 1876 when he was on honeymoon with his wife, Mary Eastlake, great niece of the artist Charles Lock Eastlake, who was President of the Royal Academy from 1850 until his death in 1865. A number of oils of Swiss subjects resulted from these expeditions.
