Lot Essay
Professor Lorenz Eitner, in a letter dated 30th September 1992, writes 'The rather attractive oil sketch of two stabled horses is one of a large number of similar studies, the attribution (or dis-attribution) of which is largely a matter of faith or flair. It is, of its kind, a rather good picture, not, I think, a copy after Géricault, but an original study. I personally do not think that it is by him, since it seems a little too tame and smooth in the two rumps.'
M. Philippe Grunchec (loc.ct.) states 'L'attribution est soutenue par M. Gobin et par P. Dubaut', but in recent verbal communication feels that 'attributed' is too bold and suggests 'entourage de Géricault'.
Germain Bazin (loc.ct.), on the other hand, writes 'le cat. 645, tres sommairement peint, est d'une exécution postérieuse et ne dont pas remonter plus loin qu'Alphonse de Neuville ou Edouard Detaille.'
