Lot Essay

Based on Primaticcio's drawing (now at Chatsworth) and closely related to Leon Davent's etching of the same subject (Zerner LD51). The design was one of the frescoes painted by Nicolo dell'Abate and included in the Chambre de la duchesse d'Etampes. The border of the present work relates to similar work by Jean Mignon (Zerner JM31). The British Museum has two impressions, the first fine and black, the second slightly less good than here.
