Lot Essay

The somewhat ragged edge to the chamois colour, discernible between the borderline and the platemark, indicates that the engraver intended the work to be trimmed close to the borderlines. The imitation of drawing meant that little importance was attached to the presence of platemark and the completeness of impression and explains why so many of such prints are encountered in a 'trimmed' state.
