Lot Essay

This drawing relates to the standing figure at the right hand side of two Baigneurs oils dated 1892-94. The first (Venturi 580) is housed in the Museé d'Orsay, Paris, and the second (Venturi 581) in The Saint Louis Art Museum. Adrien Chappuis suggests that a sketch by Luca Signorelli may well have served as a source for the present drawing (for related works see also C. 438 and 998).
