Lot Essay

This portrait was executed in 1817, during David's exile in Bruxelles, after the figure of Pope Pius VII from the Coronation of the Emperor painted in 1808, A. Schnapper et. al, Jacques-Louis David, exhib. cat., Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1990, no. 233, illustrated. The handling is close to that of the small profile portrait of Danton by David sold at Christie's, 4 July 1989, lot 189, illustrated.
