Lot Essay

The drawing probably dates from the 1840s, when Guys was giving French and drawing lessons to Dr. Girtin's two grandchildren children. During these lessons, Guys showed that he was an obsessive draughtsman since while he was teaching he could not stop drawing. Lots 328, 336 and 345 also share the same provenance.
