Lot Essay

The first album countains subjects taken from Virgil from an album collated by Girodet, but only published in lithograph after the the artist's death in 1824. After 1824 the publication was taken over by Girodet's pupils: Pannetier, De Juines, Aubry-le-Comte, Chatillon, Coupin and Monanteuil. The present volume was specifically done for the engraving: the drawing of the Dream of Didon in Montargis is inscribed by Girodet 'Le grouppe (sic) d'Enéee ici' suggesting a different placement for one group, a suggestion that was followed the drawing numbered 29 in the present album, and in the engraving by Boutard, J. Boutet-Loyer, Girodet, dessins du Musée, exhib. cat., Montargis, Musée Girodet, 1983, no. 66, illustrated. The largest part of the drawings were probably done as a studio record of Girodet's drawings.
