Lot Essay

The identification of the scene as East Bergholt derives from the Sotheby's sale catalogue and the Agnew's exhibition catalogue. It has been suggested that this drawing comes from a sketchbook measuring approximately 4½ x 7¼ in., with John Dickinson paper used at East Bergholt in 1817, and at Salisbury and Hampstead in 1820 (see G. Reynolds, The Later Paintings and Drawings of John Constable, New Haven and London, 1984, pp. 60, 66 and 301). In 1817 Constable made two visits to East Bergholt: the first in April and the second from late July to mid October, his last long visit to Suffolk.
