Lot Essay

This is probably the first preparatory study for the finished work exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1832, no. 492 (G. Reynolds, loc.cit., no. 32.9, perhaps to be identified with the watercolour no. 32.10, pl. 823). Constable returned to the subject in 1835 in a series of upright wash drawings for a publication of The Seven Ages of Shakespeare; see previous lot.
