Lot Essay

Another version of the present watercolour, signed and dated 'Rowlandson 1796', was exhibited in New Haven and London, Rowlandson's Drawings from the Paul Mellon Collection, 1978, no. 69, illustrated in colour. The basic landscape is almost identical, with arched trees framing the watercolour. Whereas the watercolour in the Paul Mellon Collection depicts a narrowly avoided collision between a horse-drawn cart and a lady and gentleman in a gig, the present watercolour shows the inn from a slightly greater distance, with hounds and huntsmen in the foreground.
