Lot Essay

The drawing is on a sheet from the larger sketchbook with Whatman paper, watermarked 1822, used mainly in and around Salisbury in 1829. However, in character the drawing is perhaps closer to later drawings executed in Sussex in 1834 and 1835, when Constable drew a particularly large number of views of cottages and barns, e.g. Reynolds nos. 34.10, 34.14, 34.21, 34.23, 34.44, 34.54, 34.56, 34.59-62, 34.67, 35.15, 35.19 pp. 7 and 9, 35.23 and 35.29.
