Lot Essay

Nicholson completed a number of watercolours of Rievaulx Abbey, one of which was engraved by W. & J. Walker and published in December 1792.
Rievaulx Abbey, situated twenty miles north of York and thirty miles from Scarborough is regarded as the most complete and most beautiful survival of a medieval abbey in England.
