Lot Essay

Bonington executed a number of watercolours of Parisian views in the last two years of his life. Another watercolour of the same view is illustrated in J. Roundell, Thomas Shotter Boys, 1974, London, p. 72. Following the appearance of this watercolour, it has been suggested that the watercolour illustrated in Roundell's book as being by Bonington, is in fact by Boys. There are a number of other watercolours of this same view of the Seine by Thomas Shotter Boys, who was Bonington's constant companion at this time.
We are grateful to Patrick Noon for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
